DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS
As Alpha Chi, we pride ourselves in service, humility and giving back to our community. Our Alpha Chi Omega national philanthropy, the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation, raises funds to promote domestic violence awareness. Our local philanthropy in Athens is Project Safe. They provide housing assistance, an emergency shelter, a 24-hour hotline and a thrift store. Project Safe works to reduce incidents of domestic violence and increase victims’ access to safety and justice. Our part is raising money and volunteering in the thrift store. 90 cents of every dollar made at the thrift store goes to supporting client services and programs. Through sponsoring domestic violence hotlines and collecting items to benefit women and children living in local shelters, Alpha Chi Omega helps to shine a light on a problem that is often covered in secrecy. We believe in women helping women so that’s why our philanthropy is close to our hearts.
WALK A MILE
"Walk a Mile" is our Fall philanthropy event supporting Domestic Violence Awareness and Project Safe. This year, we hosted it on Legion Lawn, offering hotdogs, treats, and wristbands to help raise funds. In this relay race, our participants race in high heels to bring attention to domestic violence during October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The name 'Walk a Mile' is based on the saying 'You can't understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes', and is supposed to encourage participants to reflect on the very real issue of domestic violence that occurs in our society. The event was a huge success, and we’re excited to continue this meaningful tradition!
LET’S TACO BOUT IT
Let’s Taco Bout It was our Spring philanthropy dinner benefiting Project Safe, a safe haven that helps women who have been affected by domestic violence. Everyone looked forward to this evening consisting of tacos, friends and so much fun. We are so grateful for everyone who came out to help support Domestic Violence Awareness.
LOVE SHOULD BE SWEET
Every spring Alpha Chi Omega sets up a table in the heart of campus and passes out donuts and treats to promote awareness for Healthy Relationships Week. This is one of our favorite days, especially when it falls on Valentines Day like it did this year. Along with sweets, we also pass out resources and information on healthy relationships and organizations fighting against domestic violence. This is one way we can really have our voice heard on our campus!
